32km Shalamcheh to Basra railway project on the table
The Railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran (RAI) said that Iran is ready to work with Iraq for the development of a railway from Shalamcheh in Iran to Basra in Iraq.

TEHRAN UIC RAME: RAI and Ministry of Roads and Urban Development (MRUD) announced Iran’s readiness to work with Iraq for the development of a railway from the city of Shalamcheh in Iran to the city of Basra in Iraq.

At a trilateral meeting with Iraqi and Syrian officials on Monday, 1 July 2019, it was disscussed that in order for the project to proceed, Iraq will have to introduce Iran to a local partner. The 32km project is to be implemented in three months.

A memorandum of understanding was signed after the meeting preparing the ground for construction of the project. A sketch of a big bridge over the Arvand Rud (known as Shat al-Arab in Iraq) has been prepared, and will be implemented in three months.

After completion of the project, the railway would be connected to Khorramshahr in Iran.
